The Salesians Secondary School Teachers, Tanzania

Don Bosco Procure house at Oysterbay experienced a 3 day of intense activity with the presence of our Teachers from our Secondary Schools in Tanzania. It was a big healthy mixture of Religious and Lay people focused on our common mission of empowering the young through our Educational Institutions. The focal point of our Seminar was to deepen our awareness on the richness of Don Bosco’s Educative Method, Preventive System and Youth Rights, critically analyzing the Education system in Tanzania and Teacher as Leader and Evangelizer. Realizing our close relation to the vast movement of persons, i.e. The Salesian family for the Salvation of the Young, we as teachers in the Salesians secondary schools acknowledge our strong points and the Challenges ahead. The following are the focal points of our seminar as lights and challenges in the Salesian schools:

The Lights (Strengths)

• Acknowledge that the relevance of the teacher imbibed with Salesian values is highly felt in our schools i.e. the holistic type of education, through games, debates, cultural programs and sound academic programs.
• There is a good rapport in general between us the Teaching staff and the students.
• We have good environment for learning in our schools in terms of infrastructure i.e. proper classrooms, Library, laboratories etc However, there is less utilization of the infrastructure e.g. the internet by the teachers.
• Through our deliberations realize the enormous responsibility we bear before the country , and the society in general in providing proper education; i.e. Learning to be; to do; to live together and to know; as the education of the whole person.

• We have realized the value of Preventive system of education, as first and foremost Believe in the Goodness of the Young, and in this regard, as the proper tool for fostering the Youth Rights as set out in the UN convention on Children’s rights.

• Aware of the need of not just education but quality education to our young people.

• Value the importance of Student’s participation in their educational process, they have opportunities to express themselves, be responsible, and own the education process.

In these days of the seminar (11th to 13th January 2009) we do appreciate the following challenges not from the general perspective but as seen from our Particular perspective as Teachers in Salesian Secondary Schools:

  • The Need to recognize the uniqueness of each student in our Class, and need for Positive approach, avoiding labeling them. Since the Young as distinct individual possess needs and intrinsic worth. Need to be aware of the background of the students for better clarity.
  • The need to carry out our share of the Mission within the framework of Tanzania’s educational policies without necessarily pointing fingers.
  • The need for advocacy, highlighting the situation of education in our Country, and disseminating information to the public, with the hope of bringing about positive changes in the society despite inherent lapses in the system.
  • We feel challenged to educate the young to social awareness. The awareness and response to social realities around us. The need for education to social consciousness. Involve the experiences in the learning process.
  • The need to change our mind-set, and in order for this to happen need new heart, hence, need to be a believer as a teacher.
  • We are challenged to see the need for involving Parents and others in the educational process of the young.
  • Given our comparatively better educational infrastructure, there is need to reach-out through our extra-curricular activities to our neighboring institutions.
  • We are challenged to be aware of the Charismatic nature of our mission/work as teachers.
  • To be more involved in the youth affairs and positive influence in the youth forum.
  • Need for Professional Counselors in some of our schools.
  • Frequent change of teachers, there is need for motivation for the teachers, to avoid the frequency of teachers leaving our institutions.
  • The need to encourage the students in English usage.
  • Need for career guidance in the Salesian schools, and specifically vocational guidance.
  • Introduction of Taize prayer experience for the students in collaboration with the teachers.
  • Encourage the culture of reading among the teachers, and disseminate some information through the notice board, Use the notice board for catching news or information.
  • Whenever possible involve the students in the decision making in the school, consult the students even in change of the timetable.
We stake our interest and enthusiasm on the continual collaboration of our Salesian environment and the Salesians themselves. It was indeed a wonderful experience.
